K for Koli

In #BiodiversityByTheBay, we look at a representative community for the many communities on the Islands of Mumbai and Sashasti (Salcette) that thrive on the natural wealth of the place from forests to mangroves to the sea that surrounds us. When our cities expand, they gobble up villages. The communities that rely on agriculture surrender their lands and adapt to the change, usually unsuccessfully. There are several such agricultural villages that have disappeared on this island. Some survive and hold out to this day. The Kolis, Agris, East Indians, and several communities and tribes that also depend on the land and sea and the fishing industry (net makers, carpenters, etc.) continued to survive because they depended on the mangroves (where fish spawn. , crabs live, etc.) and the sea. Now it is under threat because of pollution and rampant destruction of mangroves.

All is not lost, designing our cities and changing our priorities to cause less pollution, and protecting green space can still save some of the things that are precious.
