O for Old

For today’s #GreenSpacesDictionary and @mumbaismagicwe explore the invisible people in a city where the young and the restless live.

Of all the invisible things in this city, bicyclists, nature, etc., the most ignored people are the older folks. Even cities like Pune and Bangalore which were once called pensioners paradise are now more or less as hectic as Mumbai. That is, we ignore anyone who is not fast enough to adapt to the collective pace.

But that does not mean that the old are not around. It is just that popular culture and imagery does not notice and acknowledge them. In the pandemic, they are the most affected and it’s not news.

You will find the elderly in our collective common spaces off the peak hours. They avoid the trains (the compartment reserved for them are not even marked out and the rules enforced) and it is BEST that they rely on. You will meet them in the parks and one day we will all be old and no one will listen to us.

Speak out now for clean and green space for your future or hold your breath forever.
